Cup Fever

UP to four thousand people are expected to converge on Avoca Racecourse today for the running of the Plue Pyrenees Avoca Cup.

The day is one of the biggest on the local calendar attracting people from the Pyrenees Shire as well as Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Geelong and Melbourne.

The first of eight races will commence just after 1pm.

In addition to a great day of racing, there are eight categories in the “Fashions On The Field” competition, live music, activities for kids and an array of great food and local wine.

Fashions on the Field judge and former winner Tatiana Collier said she was expecting some tough competition this year.

“It’s a chance to dress up – really dress up – and let’s face it, there are so few opportunities to do that anymore.

“For me, while I love the atmosphere of the racetrack, it’s Fashions on the Field that I most look forward to. I especially love the Avoca Cup.

“Believe it or not, I find judging more stressful than competing, because it is very hard to choose just one winner. And after the competition it’s inevitable that a competitor will ask why they didn’t win,” she said.

Club Manager Kate Kirkpatrick said the day would not be possible without the support of local sponsors, including Blue Pyrenees Estate and the Pyrenees Advocate.

“Thanks to all our Sponsors who contribute to make the day and contribute to the community event.”

“Our committee and volunteers have been working tirelessly to prepare the course and surrounds for you to enjoy a day at the Avoca Cup – if you see them on the day or get served by a volunteer and our staff, please thank them – it goes a long way,” she said.

Last night, the Cup Eve Calsutta was held at the racecourse with guest speaker Peter George from Davenport Racing.

A free shuttle bus will be operating today from the Avoca Post Office in High Street and will also collect passengers from other local townships.

The club has sold numerous hospitality packages for the day, with a sea of marquees lining the perimeter of the track.
