Candidate – Kate Tol

If I get public support and attain a position of councillor, I plan to do the following.

I will focus on the voices of the residents of the De Cameron Ward.

As the De Cameron Ward is made up of only small communities, I feel our district is often overlooked by the Pyrenees Shire.

Our residents pay their rates and should be heard, looked after and valued. It seems that most resources are prioritised to more populated areas.

The positive communities of De Cameron are often driven by dedicated community members who get things done, and make things happen!

Conversations with locals suggest volunteer fatigue.

The residents want greater support, better services and more consultation with the Pyrenees Shire.

It is rare for a council representative to make contact, let alone visit these communities.

I would like to create regular meaningful contact with community leaders in each district of the De Cameron Ward.

Regular contact will ensure I know what issues are important to residents. I can support, advocate for action and provide information. I will work hard.

We need to highlight the wonderful attributes of our ward.

  • Our local businesses – e.g. wineries, farms, tourism, hospitality, retail, industry etc.
  • Our regions spectacular natural beauty.
  • Our services, amenities, facilities.
  • The people.

These aspects all generate community pride and a sense of belonging.

A lot of the public feel the current council is simply going through the motions.

We need to evaluate current local government practice. Identify its strengths and areas in need of improvement.

Greater efficiency, transparency and accountability must occur. Better communication and consultation with the public is paramount. A strategic plan and a common vision must be supported/created by the people.

We must aim to create a council that we can all be proud of. The council needs to;

  • Serve the people.
  • Provide quality services and facilities.
  • Promote and support local business. Employ locals.
  • Maintain and create high quality infrastructure.
  • Embrace new ideas.
  • Celebrate creativity and diversity.
  • Beautify townships and care for the environment.
  • Listen to the people.
  • Act for the people.
